Would it not be easier for someone to port firefox over to the c64  .

Sounds like you're talking about a specific somebody..? :) A year ago I was interested in network programming, but not finding a TCP/IP stack or anyone to finish one, I pretty much lost interest... The Retro Replay does not force a Commodore 128 into 64 mode, so it can be used in the native 128 mode - including the RR-Net subboard.

You should take a look at Contiki 2.1. It's a rock solid TCP/IP stack in an application friendly package with full support for RR-Net and TFE.

Only if it can be used in a stand-alone application? With my own ideas, I'm not interested in Contiki.

Contiki 2.1 for c64 consists of stand alone applications, its not like the old graphical os

Yeah, it's more of an application framework with TCP/IP and NIC support.

Hi, I'd be very interested in getting one of these if they ever make it onto the market in a stable form.

I would love to put my C64 and for that matter my Vic-20 on the network here.

Don't suppose you'll be making any for the Vic with a bit of extra ram on it as well??? ;)

One of these and a SD2IEC and I'll be a happy boy. :)

While the 1541 Ultimate is very nice. It's way out of my budget I'm afraid.

*bump*

Just to let everyone know that I'm readying an order of boards for production on behalf of a Commodore Club that's going to sell them as a fundraiser. (I think $50-$55.00 USD + shipping, but I'll let them pipe up in here).

I'm interested in technical comments on the design. I took Lars' design, TFE, and Eric's design, and merged the good parts (in my opinion) in a new design that will fit both of the current cartridge styles available on the market. The schematic and board design is at:

www.jbrain.com/vicug/gallery/nic

Of the items:

  • $DE00/$DF00 are going to be on jumpers, but can be replaced with a side mounted switch for those who care.
  • RR-NET/ETH64 mode will also be on jumpers, but can be replaced by side mounted switch
  • I put the Ethernet Jack on the left side, thinking that it would interfere with the least stuff (it won't stick out the right side, will be with the rest of the wires (IEC, video, etc.). But, it's eaiser to move to the right side if people think that is best.
  • Added address decode logic to allow multiple NIC cards on one system. Default is to allow NIC to live at the lower 16 bytes of any 32 byte block in the 256 byte IO space. If two jumpers are changed, NIC will live at the top 16 bytes of any 32 byte block in the 256 byte IO space.
  • Re-routing the board to clean up the design

I need to add the reset switch (merely forgot that in the schematic), and add the options for LEDs (right now the design uses the LEDs in the ethernet jack).

Please comment soon, as I'd like to get this job started for PCB production and assembly by end of the week (it takes ~30 days to source the parts and run the job.) 100 units is the expected first run.

First of all, great that you picked up this thread, Jim! I'm sure there's a demand for single Ethernet solutions. Although i'm not a hardware guy the design looks clean and proper. Some thoughts:

  • I think it's fine to have the RJ45 to the left and I like the idea with the jumpers/switches solution.
  • It would be neat to have leds visible from above but not necessary IMO (as you said, they're already in the RJ45 connector)
  • The Reset switch is more important i think. I'd like to have it "standard style" on the back to the right (just like AR and TFC).
  • Would it be feasible with a clockport header on the right side "facing" to the right for connecting RR-Net? Since there's a lot of unused surface and the adress decoding is already there if I got you right, it would be really neat and great valueadd

I've found the opposite: the IDE64's USB cable sticks out the left side and it's quite irritating how it gets tangled up with the IEC and video cables.

The other option would be to put it at the back, but that doesn't work so well in cart expanders or SX64s.

So, my vote is still for the right-hand side.

Now that's just nutty. 8)

I put my FB-net in a transparent case so the on-board LEDs look very cool (and are visible from across the room). I suppose if you just put the option in, people could add their own or use headers to mount the LEDs elsewhere, etc.

Great to see this thread come to life.

Would it be possible to have both side's drilled and have the placement
of the Ethernet port optional. ?
I'll opt for right.
Have Fun
