Are others like me disappointed that the 1541 Ultimate II still does not function as a stand alone 1541 drive like it's predecessor does. I would think as the true 1541is standalone and the 1541UI is standalone the new and vastly improved on 1541UII would be by now it's been sometime since the release of this fabled device. Why is standalone important!. Should you wish too use your 1541UII on any other C= computer you need it too function on it's own or if you wish too use another device in the cartridge port like a SuperCPU, Ethernet cartridge, and any other cartridge you need the 1541UII too vacate the port and function on it's own. This is one of the issues in buying items that update as you own and get released effectively as semi crippled hardware till the fix has been added. that may sound a bit harsh! i grant you this is a great device but a 1541 Ultimate it's not till it functions as a 1541 does. Unlike the Chameleon 64 camp where we see regular updates and much discussion amongst the developers and users all we hear from the 1541U camp is order information and some device being developed not the 1541U. I agree with you Shane. While the 1541U-II is a great device there are still some major issues. Problem is that all these products are being developed on a hobby basis and usually by one or a few individuals who may chose to drop or put the project on hold at any time mundane life or other interests require it. Good thing is that 1541U project is now open source so anyone can contribute, the downside is perhaps a lack of a roadmap. All we can do is to encourage people to join these efforts and contribute to the project and to make our wishes heard, like this thread for instance |

I love the 1541U for sure. The stand alone mode is nothing that I have yet needed, but I can for sure understand that there's a need for it. As for development. It's great that Chameleon gets updates, but every since I bought something from Individual Computers (RR, MMC64, MMCReplay, C-One) the development on the software side tends to stop. One can hope that it has changed with the Chameleon though. That's why I haven't bought a Chameleon yet. Looking forward to get the EasyFlash support for my 1541U-II with the 2.4 release though |

I agree the development seems to ends abruptly with the appearance of a new device. Let's hope with the Chameleon 64 having such great potential, a smaller form factor and lower price point this will not happen. It's a second chance really considering the C-Cone disapointments etc. Shane. |

I'm astonished and impressed that such advanced products actually make it to the final stage providing the small work force. Not only are these gadgets (1541u, Chameleon, etc) impressive hardware achievements, they also sporting advanced software/firmware. I do believe that going Open Source is the only way to keep such software/firmware (and thus the hardware) alive. It's just a too big endeavor for a few-man task force to maintain, especially while keeping on researching and developing new gadgets. |

True. Open Source will for sure make it easier for long term support. |
