I was messing around with the latest version of VICE (v1.21) and the ethernet funtionality. I enabled a virtual RRNet and then downloaded and ran GuruTerm. The first time, it crashed out. Then I realized I hadn't configured things properly so I corrected my mistake and tried again. This time GuruTerm didn't crash so I assumed everything was good. The only problem was that GuruTerm wasn't able to get an IP address from my DHCP server. I assumed it would work just like a 64 with an RRNet connected to my network and I had even remembered to add the virtual RRNet's MAC address to my router's allowed-list. It was a no go. Giving it an IP address et al also didn't work.

Is there something about configuring an RRNet or using GuruTerm that I've overlooked? I realize it's hard to remotely debug problems but I would appreciate any suggestions.

If you're running Windows, you need to install WinPCAP, a packet capturing interface. You find the how-to here: http://vicekb.trikaliotis.net/13-005 and can download WinPCAP here: http://www.winpcap.org/. I haven't tried the latest version though. I'm still running an older version which works great.

Hope this helps! :)

Actually, I'm running VICE under OS X (the UNIX/X11 port) and I did read and comply with the instructions given in the VICE Knowledge Base entry. Unfortunately, it didn't work. I'm discussing this with the maintainer of the Mac port and I posted this query here on the off chance I had missed something obvious with GuruTerm. I'm going to keep hacking away at it and I'll report back when I get it going in case anyone else is interested in doing the same.

Thanks for the quick reply. Most appreciated.

GT should simply "plug and play". There is a bug which causes the DNS resolving not to work with slow DNS servers / slow networks. Direct IP address should never fail though. And so far I've got no reports on trouble with the DHCP.

Keep us posted!

I had some tests with Mac VICE and GuruTerm.

If I use the inernal ethernet of my MBP (here en0) and connect to my router with a cable then everything works as expected. GuruTerm's DHCP works and later on I can successfully 'dial' and log into a BBS...

If I use the airport WLAN card of my MBP (here en1) then it doesn't work. The symptons here are: the airport connection drops immediately and VICE cannot open the adapter. Some googl'ing told me that the libpcap library which is used for VICE has a bug concering airports and only the most current CVS version of libpcap should work. Unfortunately VICE is compiled against the latest stable version of the lib and still has the bug.

I recompiled VICE with a fresh CVS libpcap and now the airport stays connected if I use en1 for RRNet. Unfortunately, the packet injection still does not work as expected (maybe another bug in pcap?) and so I still can't connect via en1 :( I will have a deeper look at that later...

Since other programs using libpcap, e.g. Wireshark, tcpdump... suffer from the same problems on Airports I hope the problem gets fixed soon...
So stay tuned...

Hey Christian. I'm sorry I haven't responded to your email yet. I'm trying to do too many things at once and failing miserably. I will get back to you shortly.

Same here. I suspected the problem had something to do with driver interaction with my Airport card so I tested things with ethernet and it worked perfectly.

On a related note, I've had success using VICE to run a 64 terminal program and then using that program to dial-out on my MacBook's external USB modem. It's whacky but it works.

VICE is an impressive and versatile program.
